Bottles of cosmetic products may turn into paper rather than plastic forward to tubes. Through their joint venture Paboco, paper packaging material designer BillerudKorsnäs and plastic bottles manufacturing specialist Alpla are launching the Paper Bottle Community to support the development and industrialization of effective 100% bio-based and recyclable paper bottles for liquids. The campaign has already been supported by suppliers of consumer goods such as Carlsberg, The Absolut Company (Pernod-Ricard), L'Oréal and Coca-Cola Europe.

ALPLA and BillerudKorsnäs, a leading Swedish manufacturer of paper packaging materials and solutions, revealed in April 2019 that they are forming a joint venture to produce a paper container. This joint venture is now a company formed under the name Paboco, the joint venture is getting more interesting with the participation of Coca-Cola and L'Oréal.

Eco-friendly packaging centers on whether the box containing the product for skin care is biodegradable, made from recycled materials or is itself recyclable. This can be a challenge since the packaging needs to keep the goods protected, clean and undisturbed. The paper bottle campaign is potentially beauty industry's most significant initiative of our era. The beginning of a journey that will ignite a market revolution around the world in our search for better solutions for a healthy daily life.

Building on years of experience, the design journey began in 2015 with the technology specialist ecoXpac in close collaboration with the Carlsberg Group and BillerudKorsnäs, followed by project partners joining the path. It is now run as its own corporation, name and product–Paboco, the paper bottle company, to build publicity and provide the best possible conditions.

Paboco is now a joint venture between BillerudKorsnäs, manufacturer of paper packaging materials, and Alpla, specialist in bottle processing, in 2019. Nonetheless, creating a paper bottle is a task of great opportunities requiring equal dedication and teamwork, the economic and sustainability potential is immense. The Paper Bottle is a step-by-step concept of innovation oriented on scaling functionality, the first of its kind for liquid goods such as carbonated and still drinks, beauty products and more.

Today, renewable paper is used by the first-generation paper bottle to build strength and structure, supported by a unique barrier solution for each product, enabling the bottle to be recycled by separating paper and barrier.
